2023 editing roundup
It’s the end of another year, so that means it’s time for another editing roundup! I love doing these every year and looking back on all the projects I’ve worked on as a full-time freelance editor. If you want a glimpse into that kind of life, read on!
Project breakdown – what did I work on?
My work has become almost exclusively novels nowadays, which is perfect for me because I love fiction.
Services performed
- Sensitivity reads: 1
- Copy/line edits: 12
- Proofreads: 17 (all for publishers)
- Manuscript assessments: 8 (one of these was unusual this year since it was for an entire trilogy!)
- Developmental edits: 2
- Submission packages: 6
I provided 46 separate services this year! Last year, I did 47, so things have pretty much remained the same.
I’ve moved away from beta reading completely, but I occasionally do sensitivity reads for publishers and I did one of those this year for a YA novel. I also started offering full developmental edits later in the year, and took on a couple of those.
Types of material
- Books: 40
- Chapters/submission material: 6
Age categories
- YA: 13
- Middle grade: 1
- Adult: 32
Genres
My top genres were pretty much the same as last year! Lots of fantasy and sci-fi, romance, contemporary fiction, and thrillers.
Other wins
- Invited to do a Zoom talk on blogging for a local chapter of the Editorial Freelancers Association, which was a lot of fun! I love blogging about writing, editing, and publishing, so it was great to share what I’ve learned.
- Started working with a couple of new publisher clients.
- I already work with some of the Big 5 publishers, but this year, I ended up working with the New York branch of one of them, which was neat!
- Saw a couple of clients complete their series, which I’d helped them with from the start.
There are a couple of wins I can’t talk about yet as the details are forthcoming in 2024, so I’m tight-lipped for now! *mysterious laugh*
Some books I worked on in 2023
Here are some of the client projects I worked on this year as a freelance editor!
Plans for 2024
I’ve been a freelance editor for six years now, and in 2024 I’ll be celebrating seven years in business, which is amazing. I’m still booking well in advance, and I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who has worked with me over the years. As far as editing goes, my plan is just to keep going, and keep helping authors! I love developmental and line work in particular, and I also plan to revamp my submission package services and get those added to this website properly again when I can find the time.
With my own writing, there are lots of things I can’t talk about yet, but let’s just say that 2024 is going to be very exciting. Watch this space!
If you’d like to get on my editing calendar for 2024 (I’m booking for March onwards depending on the service you want), you can fill out my contact form here.
